Elizabeth Street:

Elizabeth St is one of Melbourne's main streets' main streets, part of the Hoddle Grid, laid out in 1837. It is thought to have been named in honour of governor Richard Bourke's wife, who was also rumoured to have a love of French Pears.

In 1850, pears were brought over to Australia by Chinese miners, making this precious fruit available to everyone, not just for Royalty and the wealthy.

Elizabeth St is the lowest point in Melbourne CBD, with land rising on both sides and gradually to the north. The street has a historic natural creek running underneath it; in some parts, when the timing is just right, you can still hear it running.

The street is now famous as a retail shopping precinct, with crucial shopping and tourist destinations such as Bourke St Mall, Melbourne's GPO, Melbourne Central Shopping Centre and Queen Victoria Market.

French Pears:

A unique pear fragrance. This variety of pear derives its name from the phrase Doyenne du Comice, meaning 'Top of the show', as they are often celebrated as the best pear variety. Originating in France, the fragrance is rich, juicy and meltingly smooth.
