Apart of the original Hoddle Grid layout in 1837, King St has become a main thoroughfare connecting Southbank and North Melbourne through the city centre. King st is named after Captain Philip Gidley King – the third Governor of New South Wales.

At the Southern block bordered by King, Flinders and Spencer Sts stood the Corporation Market; built-in 1890 by the City Council, these extravagant buildings were described as one of the finest sets of market buildings in the world, which were demolished in 1959 to make way for car parks for the Olympic Games.

The buildings covered 2.3 hectares near Spencer St and hid part of the railway viaduct. Facing Flinders St featured a large faceless clock tower that complemented Flinders St Station. In memory of the amazing market buildings, this candle has the fragrance of Pomegranates that would have been imported into the city and sold here.
