Named after surveyor Robert Hoddle, who is known for the “Hoddle Grid”, arrived in Melbourne in 1837, employed the regulations established by Governor Darling, who required square blocks and wide streets, along with Governor Bourke's desire for rear access ways (known as Melbourne’s 'little' streets).
Along Hoddle Street in 1888, there was a fledgling business called Whybrow & Co. located in a brick shop at 202 Hoddle St, and grew to four brick houses at 204-210, and later a factory at the site of the present-day 200 Hoddle St.
With the present building being constructed in 1919 by Whybrows who owned the entire Hoddle St frontage between Studley and Stafford Sts. as early as 1894, Whybrows were leaders in their field, being amongst the first companies to introduce lasting machines with the fragrance of Vintage Leather and Sandalwood filling the air every day.
