Running roughly parallel to the Yarra River, Flinders St forms the southern edge of the Hoddle Grid. It is exactly 1 mile (1.6km) in length and one and a half chains (99 ft, 30 m) in width.
Named for the explorer Matthew Flinders, erroneously credited for discovering Port Phillip at the time of its naming, with the street extending eastwards to Spring St and westwards past Batman's Hill to the Melbourne Docks.
As the closest street to the river, it serviced Melbourne's original river port at the Corporation Market and Customs House.
On Sundays when St Paul's Cathedral is in service, Flinders St is full with the sound of bells ringing and the fragrance of Frankincense and Myrrh wafting over the street to Flinders St Train Station.
Frankincense and Myrrh:
Like the three wise men who travelled from afar, this fragrance brings together an exotic blend of ancient woods, oriental spices, sweet citrus and romantic musk, an enchanting, aromatic blend of frankincense and myrrh with balsam, spice, patchouli and sandalwood.
Top Notes: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Myrrh
Middle Notes: Balsam, Frankincense
Base Notes: Patchouli, Sandalwood
